If that's what's rocking etsy at the mo, I've got about 100 they can have. They might be full of random top 40 pop songs circa '85 - '92 but hey-ho.
And it doesn't seem that long ago that I dialled my friends after school every day of one of these.
Took about half an hour to do it and God forbid you got the wrong number and had to start all over again, but hey-ho.
You'd never know I was turning a rather large number later this year would you? Then I shall be a 'cute old thing' myself. Let the brooding begin ;-)

Know what you mean - my boys found an old dial phone in a museum recently and were totally tickled by me teaching them how to use it. They couldn't believe how we used to take such a long time just making a call. But that old 'ratcheting' noise down the line was so incredibly evocative. I had no idea I had such strong memories of it.
ReplyDeleteHehe - it's ok, I still have all my cassette tapes and I also had one of these phones in green - Dan was laughing at me yesterday because I could remember the time before duvets! Sheets and blankets? Or perhaps we just weren't up with the times in Devon....
ReplyDeleteyep, we had sheets and blankets. But we were also a bit behind the times! In 1985 my mum turned our room into a black/white/red 80s haven! Wish I still had that black & white squared duvet cover now. so now! x
DeleteHehe, love the black/white/red haven - you’re right, would go down a storm now! Would you believe (you probably do actually) that in the mid 80s, I had this pastel pink/green/yellow triangles wall paper, curtains and lampshade in my bedroom - I chose it all myself and adored it! If only I had a picture somewhere...there seems to be no proof that my triangle love started at an early age. Even my favourite Quality Street is the triangle one and was as early as I can remember. x
DeleteHa! Yes I've got some old tapes too - all filled with recordings of the top 40 and top of the pops...I might have to dig them out for old times’ sake!
ReplyDeleteHa! I still have a cassette player in my car, so I must be truly 'down with the kids'! Those phones are fab, remember the noise they made when the dial sprung back - lovely! Are you a 1973 babe? If you are, then me too lady! x
ReplyDeleteyes jen, '73. what month are you? x
DeleteSeptember. You? x
Deleteme too! 13th. x
DeleteI'm the 16th! I think we should have a party! x
Deletesomething should happen for sure! even if it's just some kind of online shindig! thinking cap on...
DeleteWe had that phone too, a dull grey one. I kind of like the sound when you dialed..
ReplyDeleteAh you too eh? Well then we shall definitely have to meet up if only to bemoan our ancientness (preferably while sipping something cold and fizzy).
ReplyDeletewell that's that then flo. now i'm thinking we should organise some kind of 40 year old blogger's bash. it has to be a 'bash' coz only 40 year olds say that. x
DeleteThat's better than the going rate for a CD and they are the height of technology aren't they?
ReplyDeleteEvery time we do a clear out my tapes somehow manage to resist the cull, partly due to the lovingly home-made covers. Also, my copy of 'Strangeways here we come' (fave album of all time) is much better for the mistaken scream recorded over the top of Girlfriend in a Coma.
Ah tape memories...
that is hilarious alexis! i know that album very well, my sister played it over and over again when she first got into the smiths and now i love it too. I think mozza would like the idea of a random scream in the middle of girlfriend in a coma!
DeleteSimilar story from me - especially sheets and blankets. I still play my tapes while I'm working. Also, I have that same impending birthday - feels like a big deadline!
ReplyDeleteyes but for what? what are we supposed to get done?! i'd like to play tapes while i'm working. i've been looking for my double-sided astral weeks/moondance for ages :-)
Delete4 months to the day I will have the same big birthday! Arghhhhhhh!
ReplyDeletewoo-hoo! you too! how are you coping? x
DeleteSo far so good! I was trying hard not to be "fat and forty" but so far thats not really working out for me!
DeleteMost of my friends turned 40 last year and most struggled with it and had mini freak-outs so I'm expecting the same :)
How about you?
i think i'm gonna have a full on mid-life crisis! x
DeleteWhen I went to Sarah's at christmas, they still had the dial up phone... my boys couldn't get their heads around it! Numbers with 9 in them were always kinda tricky. x.
ReplyDeleteNo way! X
DeleteHaha. I have been a 'cute old thing' for such a long time...and do you remember the huge, first mobile phones? They were so ugly, do you think they will ever be considered cute old? NAH...
ReplyDeleteHa ha, yes - we were on the verge of buying our 2 year old an old tape player for Christmas seeing as he's scratched so many CDs we've had to ban him. Was almost looking forward to demonstrating the rewind-with-a-pencil knack.
ReplyDeleteI could've made my fortune from mending mangled cassette tapes. I had a real skill! x
DeleteHa that's so funny, I've still got my tapes too and our car still has a player though I never use it (I should)! I'd forgotten the thing of dialing though, getting the number wrong and the frustration of starting all over again!
